Digestive symptoms can be frustrating, disruptive and difficult to understand. If you're dealing with persistent bloating, abdominal discomfort, IBS, reflux, constipation, diarrhea or other digestive concerns, naturopathic care can provide an opportunity to look at your symptoms within the context of your overall health.

Dr. Camilia Destteffano, ND provides individualized virtual naturopathic digestive health care for eligible patients in Ontario.

Together, we can explore your symptoms, health history, nutrition, lifestyle and other relevant factors to develop an individualized approach to your care.

There isn't one digestive health plan that works for everyone.

During your consultation, I may consider:

  • Your current digestive symptoms and when they began

  • Your bowel habits and changes over time

  • Dietary patterns and food-related symptoms

  • Previous diagnoses and treatments

  • Medications and supplements

  • Stress and lifestyle factors

  • Sleep and energy

  • Relevant laboratory or diagnostic information

  • Your broader health history

  • Your personal health goals

The goal is to understand your individual health picture rather than focusing on a single symptom in isolation.

Digestive Concerns I Can Help You Explore

Digestive symptoms can have many possible contributing factors and can look different from person to person. Naturopathic care may be appropriate for a range of digestive concerns, including:

Bloating & Gas

Persistent bloating or excessive gas can be uncomfortable and frustrating, especially when symptoms seem unpredictable or difficult to connect to specific foods or situations.

A digestive health consultation can help explore your symptoms, eating patterns, bowel habits, lifestyle and other relevant aspects of your health.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS can involve abdominal discomfort, bloating and changes in bowel habits, including constipation, diarrhea or alternating between the two.

Naturopathic care takes an individualized approach to understanding your symptoms and identifying appropriate nutrition and lifestyle considerations.

SIBO

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) may be associated with symptoms such as bloating, gas and changes in bowel habits.

If SIBO is suspected or you've already received a diagnosis, we can discuss your health history, relevant testing and appropriate care considerations.

Reflux & GERD

Heartburn, reflux and related digestive symptoms can interfere with meals, sleep and everyday activities.

Your individual health history, symptoms, medications and lifestyle can all be relevant when developing an appropriate approach to care.

Constipation

Constipation can involve infrequent bowel movements, difficulty passing stool or changes in normal bowel habits.

Your consultation may explore nutrition, hydration, physical activity, medications, supplements, lifestyle and other relevant factors.

Diarrhea & Changes in Bowel Habits

Recurring diarrhea or significant changes in bowel habits deserve attention, particularly when symptoms are persistent or unexplained.

A detailed health history can help determine what further assessment, investigation or support may be appropriate.

What to Expect From a Virtual Digestive Health Consultation

Discuss your health history

Your initial appointment gives us time to discuss your digestive concerns, symptoms, health history, current medications and supplements, lifestyle and goals.

2. Look at the bigger picture

Digestive symptoms can overlap with many aspects of health. We'll consider relevant factors rather than looking at one symptom in isolation.

3. Develop an individualized approach

Depending on your circumstances, your care plan may include nutrition and lifestyle recommendations, naturopathic approaches, consideration of relevant testing or coordination with other healthcare professionals.

4. Follow up and reassess

Follow-up appointments provide an opportunity to review changes, discuss your experience and adjust your care plan as appropriate.

Working Alongside Your Existing Healthcare Team

Naturopathic care does not have to replace your existing medical care.

Depending on your circumstances, naturopathic care may be used alongside care from your family doctor, gastroenterologist or other healthcare professionals.

If your symptoms suggest that additional medical assessment or investigation is appropriate, I will recommend seeking the appropriate care.

When Should You Seek Medical Care?

Some digestive symptoms require medical evaluation rather than naturopathic care alone.

Seek appropriate medical attention for symptoms such as:

  • Severe or worsening abdominal pain

  • Significant or unexplained weight loss

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding

  • Black or bloody stools

  • Persistent vomiting

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Persistent fever

  • Jaundice

  • Severe dehydration

  • Other new, severe or rapidly worsening symptoms

If you're experiencing an emergency, seek immediate medical attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a naturopath help with bloating?

Can a naturopath help with IBS?

IBS is one of the digestive concerns that may be addressed through individualized naturopathic care. Your approach will depend on your symptoms, health history, diagnosis, and goals. We can look at factors such as nutrition, bowel habits, lifestyle, stress, and other relevant aspects of your health.

Can a naturopath help with SIBO?

If SIBO is suspected or has already been diagnosed, a consultation can include discussion of your symptoms, relevant testing, health history, and appropriate care considerations. Your care plan will be individualized based on your circumstances and goals.

Can digestive health appointments be done virtually?

Yes. Digestive health consultations are available virtually for eligible patients in Ontario, allowing you to meet with me from the comfort of your own home without travelling to a clinic.

Can you work with my family doctor or other healthcare providers?

Yes. Naturopathic care can be provided alongside conventional medical care when appropriate. If collaboration with your family doctor, gastroenterologist, or another healthcare professional is indicated, this can be discussed as part of your care.

Do I need a diagnosis before seeing a naturopath?

No. You can book a consultation to discuss your digestive symptoms even if you don't have a specific diagnosis. Your symptoms and health history can help determine whether naturopathic care may be appropriate and whether additional medical assessment or referral may be needed.

Do I need a referral?

A referral is generally not required to book a naturopathic consultation. If you have questions about whether naturopathic care is appropriate for your particular circumstances, you can contact the practice before booking.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

If available, it can be helpful to have a list of your current medications and supplements, relevant medical records or test results, previous diagnoses, and a general timeline of your digestive symptoms.
